I would to think that I have always been the type of person that appreciates even the simplest of life's pleasures. There really are so many things to appreciate about life (like life itself!) but I have found that motherhood has made me grateful for some of these things on a whole new level.
I'm glad you asked!
Here are 7 things I have become more grateful for as a mom:
I have always been a fan of a nice (long) hot shower or bath. So much so, that growing up I was banned from showering before anyone else in the family. Anytime I can take a long(ish) shower or bath, it's heavenly.
More than five minutes to do my makeup.
I can do my makeup quick. And not just because I'm a mom. I've always been able to do a full face in under 5 minutes. However, just because you can do something doesn't mean you like it. I love to spend a long time doing my makeup. Not because I need to but because I like to. It relaxes me. Sometimes I will do my makeup at 10pm just for fun. I know, I'm weird.
When my son was younger, I would frequently get trapped in nap time. As a work at home mom, this would have been the perfect time to work. This made me extra grateful for cell phones. After a little snooze of my own, I would pull out my phone and do whatever work I could from my phone. Now that my son is older, I occasionally get trapped on the couch watching his favorite show… so the phone still comes in handy!
Great phone conversations with friends.
Life is busy, not just for moms, for all of us. But when you have a little one there are some extra challenges when it comes to getting some good conversation in with other adults. The majority of my friends live in other states, so we connect mostly through text and phone calls. I am really grateful for the conversations I am able to have with friends, though maybe they don't happen as often as I would like.
I am also grateful for my friends (particularly my friends without kids) who are so very patient with me in my delayed responses, interruptions from a screaming child, my incessant babbling about my kid and abrupt hang ups!
I almost didn't include this one because, honestly, they are so few and far between. But here's the thing, they have happened and I need to be grateful for that. And I really am!
Just like the great conversations, I have always enjoyed a good girls night (day, morning... whatever) out. Now, they are even more precious to me!
It's no secret that motherhood completely changes your body and it is really easy to feel anything but grateful for those changes. However, motherhood has given me a deep appreciation for my body. When I was pregnant, I was in complete awe over how my body changed to become a home for this new little person. It was amazing to me. Each month as I read what was going on with my baby and my body, I was grateful. And even now when I think about how my body did what it was supposed to do (mostly, unfortunately, I had a C-section but I don't blame that on my body) to bring this child into the world and to feed him. I am even thankful for all of the weird things because it's just amazing.
Being a mom has opened my eyes to love in a way that I never could have imagined. I have learned things about my own ability to love and I have become more appreciative of those that have loved me without condition.
What has motherhood made you more grateful for?
